Akeel Austin

Bio

U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Akeel Austin was born October 5, 1989 in Hollywood, Fl. He graduated from Catonsville High School, MD, in May 2007 and became a Marine in Dec, 2012. After graduating basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC he attended Basic Still Photography at the Defense Information School, Fort George G. Meade, MD.

In August 2013, Pfc. Austin reported to his first command, 1st Marine Division Combat Camera, Camp Pendleton, CA. While aboard he served in different climates, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Vietnam mission VM-14, Cobra Gold 15 and 17, Kingdom of Thailand, Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Central Command 16.1, Al Jaber, Kuwait Operation Inherent Resolve 2015-16.

After his tour at Camp Pendleton, he was selected to attend the Military Photojournalism program at the Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University.

The next adventure in his career awaits at Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan.

Sgt. Austin’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Joint Meritorious Unit Award.
