She also works two jobs; one as a coach at the YMCA, and one as a mental health counselor at Hamilton College. She&#8217;s also a triathlete with a rigorous training regimen. Despite this demanding schedule, she continues to push her body to the limits in order to make it across the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor began racing in triathlons after her swim coach in college, who was also an Ironman, encouraged her to go out for a race. She already had the background as a cross-country runner and swimmer, but she needed to build her stamina in cycling. Her father was a triathlete, and she credits him as her biggest inspiration in getting more involved with the sport.<\/p>\n<p>Since she started racing, Taylor has competed in 17 triathlons, including two half Ironman races and a half marathon. Triathlons are broken up into four groups: Sprint distance, Olympic distance, half Ironman, and Ironman. The sprint tri involves a 750m open swim, a 20k bike and a 5k run. The events double as the difficulty progresses. Taylor plans to compete in her first Ironman, the Lake Placid Ironman, next summer. Until then, she has a lot of training to do to be where she wants to be as a competitor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taylor Macfarland is a grad student.
