Near Cayuga Lake is one of the best flyways in the United States to spot snow geese during their migration to the North; however, this year was rough for these hunters. The geese didn’t migrate in great numbers through the flyways due to late spring thaws, but the guides of Frontenac fowlers still went out daily to wait, watch and be in their element until the very last day of the season.
Setting decoys is an essential part to waterfowl hunting. "When it's this late in the season, you hope to call in a few of the straglers."
"Goose hunting, duck hunting, turkey hunting, it all goes beyond pulling the trigger."
Mr. Fitz
"I am addicted to waterfowl hunting."
"We'll be lucky to see any birds this late in the season, but it was nice to get out here with Al and Ryan. Getting a goose would just be a bonus."
The "purple pit" is the largest blind owned by Frontenac fowler guide service owner "Big Jay." It seats six, has heat and a small stove for cooking breakfast.
"All these young guides on Facebook advertise their piles of geese and assume that'll help your business. I realized not long ago that I'm not in the hunting business, I'm creating an experience for my clients."
At the end of the season, the Frontenac fowler guides pack up the "purple pit" to prepare for turkey season.
