Bio
Technical Sergeant Michael Battles is a U.S. Air Force photojournalist currently enrolled in the Military Visual Journalism program at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University. Sergeant Battles is 1 of 5 photographers representing the U.S. Air Force.
In 2017, while assigned to the 1st Combat Camera Squadron at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, Sergeant Battles deployed in support of operations Inherent Resolve and Freedom Sentinel. During his deployment he documented both, aerial and ground; combat and support missions in 10 Middle Eastern countries, to include Afghanistan and Syria. Additionally, in 2016
Sergeant Battles placed first in the military-wide Combat Camera ShootOff, held by the 1st CTCS. He then went on to win the 2017 Defense Media Activity D.C. ShootOff Photojournalism Workshop and Competition. Furthermore, Sergeant Battles is the 2017 Air Force Public Affairs Agency’s Photojournalist of the Year.
Sergeant Battles will graduate in May 2019 and return to the U.S. Air Force to continue his photojournalism career at the 6th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.
