L-Duz is a barber at Life on the Edge Barbershop Lounge and active in his community of North Syracuse. He mentors the youth, coaches young men in football, volunteers at homeless shelters, and gives away school supplies to those children in need. Catching COVID-19 and surviving it changed his outlook on and approach to life. He is now in search of what comes next, barbering doesn’t seem to be it, but helping his community more does.

Photos taken of the Once Upon A STAR program, for my Project 1 of my Visual Editing Class at Syracuse University. Once Upon Star was started by Sultani Cambell, a Syracuse’s Southside resident and U.S. Army Veteran. After the Rye Day shooting of June 2020, he wanted to create a safe haven for kids who come from violent backgrounds. STAR stands for Safe, Thriving, Ambitious, Restored.
OUAS goal is to teach youth from the ages of 11-19 that success has little to do with circumstance and everything to do with effort. In reality your circumstance is what molds you but your resilience and inner strength is what makes you.

Ed Mitchell Jr. is the founder of TEAM A.N.G.E.L. mentoring and youth development program. A.N.G.E.L, stands for Avoid Negative Garbage Enjoy Life. Mitchell was a regular participant in community-based programming, and it helped him get through high school and into college. He noticed cuts in community programming and the impact it had on the youth in his neighborhood, so he created A.N.G.E.L. The program is designed to build skills, support social and self-awareness in a safe and inviting community for youth in Syracuse.
