Standing in the middle of a closed off street in full wardrobe, masks and makeup, Talia<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shenandoah, and members of the Salt City Burlesque Troupe film as each member takes their<\/p>\n\n\n\n
turn performing a solo act, only this time they weren\u2019t dancing for an audience, they were<\/p>\n\n\n\n
dancing for a camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adapting to the COVID restrictions and guidelines set in place by the New York state governor,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the troupe has developed a fully virtual experience for their followers. They have increased<\/p>\n\n\n\n
their social media presence and following, filmed videos, and worked with producers to create<\/p>\n\n\n\n
live virtual shows to be viewed around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Working with Flame Night Fever, a local online drag show that developed from the desire to<\/p>\n\n\n\n
perform during the pandemic, the troupe was able to expand into streaming their shows<\/p>\n\n\n\n
through Twitch, an online streaming platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The troupe was founded in 2015 by Shenandoah and Christian Suchon in Syracuse, New York<\/p>\n\n\n\n
using the name \u201cSalt City Burlesque\u201d which is a play on the historical name used for Syracuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The goal of the troupe is to make inclusive, vaudeville style entertainment that feature music,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
dance, comedy, striptease, and flow arts using fire, hula hoop, and props, while educating the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
public on the historical significance of the art form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although performing regularly at local venues prior to the pandemic, when the state shutdown<\/p>\n\n\n\n
they were forced to stop meeting up and performing in public. Annual events were cancelled<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and many members that lived elsewhere were no longer able to travel and perform with the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After months of quarantine and self-isolation, in July the group decided it was time to try and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
figure out how to share their love for the art with the community once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was tired of sitting around and waiting for this pandemic to end,\u201d said Shenandoah. \u201cI got<\/p>\n\n\n\n
some equipment together and video editing software and started figuring out how I could best<\/p>\n\n\n\n
create art that the community would love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Months later and after countless hours of planning, filming and editing, the troupe was ready to<\/p>\n\n\n\n
start promoting themselves again. They updated teasers to their Facebook and Instagram<\/p>\n\n\n\n
accounts starting with performer highlights that showcases small parts if individual<\/p>\n\n\n\n
performance and eventually ended with an invitation to a live Twitch stream and viewing party<\/p>\n\n\n\n
at Wunderbar in downtown Syracuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe finally had most of the pieces together, but we still needed someone experienced enough<\/p>\n\n\n\n
to run the technical side of the stream,\u201d said Shenandoah as she recalled reaching out to the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
producers of Flame Night Fever who had recently figured out how to stream risqu\u00e9 content<\/p>\n\n\n\n
without being shut down by terms of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Together they hosted a party at Wunderbar where they were able to finally interact with the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
audience while drinking and dancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur goal has always just been to share, share our art, share our experience, share our love of<\/p>\n\n\n\n
dance and performing with the community,\u201d said Shenandoah. \u201cWe were successful regardless<\/p>\n\n\n\n
of all of the restrictions that have come from the pandemic. We are going to continue to adapt<\/p>\n\n\n\n
