Just a few days prior Sanford had gotten clean as a result of spending several weeks in Upstate Community Hospital. He wanted to go from the hospital to drug rehab but was told he'd be put on the waiting list. As a result, he ended up back on the street, using heroin and other drugs. The method of drug use for Sanford on this particular day is referred to as speed balling which occurs during the intravenous use of cocaine with heroin or morphine in the same syringe causing an intense rush of euphoria with a high that is supposed to combine the effects of both drugs, while hoping to reduce the negative effects, such as anxiety, hypertension and other common side effects.
