Bounome Chanphouang
Bio
Bounome Chanphouang is her real name, but everyone knows this Sailor as JP. She joined the United States Navy on Feb. 14, 2012 as a Mass Communication Specialist.
JP is first generation American in her family. Her mother and four older brothers and sisters were refugees who came to America for a better life. She was born in Buffalo, NY, but grew up in the New England area in Dover, NH.
JP was attached to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) for three years prior to coming to the Military Visual Journalism Program. She left halfway through the deployment to attend SU.
JP will be stationed at Naples, Italy for her next command.
JP plans to further her education in Television, Radio and Film at SU to achieve her bachelor’s degree. Then she hopes to enroll in NYU’s Screenwriting Masters program.
She credits her older siblings Bounthanome, Somboun and Bounhome for instilling good work ethic in her. She also credits them for telling her their great stories of how they came to the U.S. to achieve the American Dream. This taught her how to listen.
JP credits her many mentors and leadership aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt for instilling in her good character and patience. More importantly she thanks them for having faith in her, her work and her ability to tell a story. Their faith is what led JP to Newhouse. They include: Herbert Banks, Jack Georges, Melissa Guevara, Eric Cutright, Patrick Evans, Gino Carr, Adrian Melendez and Justin Ailes. Apologies for those left out.
