Sean Hurt
Photojournalist, United States Navy

Sean Hurt joined the Navy in 2010 as a Mass Communication Specialist.

Upon graduation from the Defense Information School, Hurt reported to his first duty station, the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) where he served as photography supervisor and photo editor for the ship’s newspaper, The Rough Rider.

From Theodore Roosevelt, he was selected to be a features section staff photographer on the U.S. Navy’s flagship publication, All Hands Magazine Online.

After six months at All Hands, he was hand-selected to serve as the personal photographer to the 24th Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel. While there he traveled around the world documenting the life of the Defense Department’s senior official. After Hagel’s departure from office, Hurt covered the arrival and transition period of 25th Secretary of Defense Ash Carter. He photographed both secretaries through some of the most difficult times in the history of the department, including the rise of the Islamic State, the battle against sexual assault in the military, the 2014 Ebola Crisis, and tensions between Russia and Ukraine. During his time at the position, he traveled to 7 countries and more than 15 states.

From there, Hurt was selected to attend the DOD’s Military Visual Journalism program at Syracuse University, where he currently studies motion media. In May, he plans to graduate and transition to another aircraft carrier to pass his skills on to sailors there.

During his six years in the Navy, Hurt has established himself as one of the elite photojournalists in the Department of Defense, having been awarded multiple titles at various military photographic competitions. In 2014, he was named Navy Photographer of the Year.

He enjoys mentoring up-and-coming military photographers and volunteers his personal time every year to be a mentor at DOD media workshops.

He currently lives between his duty station in Norfolk, Va. and his home in the Baltimore, Maryland area with his wife and two children. He is a passionate photojournalist, available for assignment throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
